The Accidental Petpreneur: The Story of Shuige Sun and Yiwu Shouxiang Company
In the bustling city of Yiwu, China, known as the “world’s supermarket” for its massive wholesale markets, Shuige Sun never imagined that a simple stroll through the market would change his life forever. It was 2012, and Sun, then a sales manager for a small trading company, was wandering through the endless aisles of Yiwu International Trade Market when he stumbled upon something peculiar—a chaotic, disorganized section dedicated to specialty pet products.
A Market Gap and a Spark of Inspiration
The pet products section was an afterthought—cheap, flimsy toys, poorly designed feeding bowls, and questionable pet accessories stacked haphazardly. Sun, who had recently adopted a stray dog named Lucky, frowned at the sight. “If I wouldn’t buy these for my own pet, why would anyone else?” he thought.
Curious, he struck up a conversation with a vendor, who shrugged and said, “People just buy whatever’s cheap. Nobody really thinks about pet health here.” That statement lingered in Sun’s mind. What if someone did care? What if pets could have better-designed, safer, and healthier products?
From Idea to Reality: The Birth of Yiwu Shouxiang
In 2013, Sun took a leap of faith. With his modest savings and a small loan, he rented a tiny office in Yiwu and officially founded Yiwu Shouxiang Company—a name that combined “Shou” (Chinese meaning “animal”) and “Xiang” (Chinese meaning “enjoy”), reflecting his vision: helping pets enjoy a healthier life.
The early days were tough. Sun had no experience in manufacturing, and convincing suppliers to produce higher-quality pet products was an uphill battle. “Why spend more on materials? Pets don’t care!” they’d say. But Sun insisted—his mission wasn’t just about selling products; it was about improving pets’ lives.
The First Product: A Simple Bowl That Changed Everything
Sun’s first product was a non-slip, stainless steel pet bowl—something he designed after noticing how often Lucky’s plastic bowl would tip over, spilling food everywhere. He wanted something durable, easy to clean, and safe for pets.
The initial prototype was a disaster. The first batch of bowls had sharp edges, and the non-slip base peeled off after a few washes. Sun was devastated—he had invested most of his money into this product. But instead of giving up, he went back to the drawing board. He consulted veterinarians, tested different materials, and finally perfected the design.
When he relaunched the bowl, the response was unexpectedly positive. Small pet stores and online retailers started placing orders. Customers loved that the bowl was sturdy, hygienic, and actually functional—unlike the flimsy alternatives flooding the market.
Scaling Up: From Bowls to a Full Pet Wellness Brand
With the success of the first product, Sun expanded Yiwu Shouxiang’s lineup. He introduced:
Eco-friendly pet toys made from natural rubber (no more toxic plastics!)
Adjustable pet harnesses designed for comfort and safety
Self-cleaning litter boxes for fuss-free maintenance
Each product was developed with pet health in mind. Sun even partnered with local animal shelters, donating supplies and sponsoring adoption events. His philosophy was simple: “If it’s not good enough for my own pet, it’s not good enough for any pet.”
Challenges and Triumphs
Of course, the journey wasn’t smooth. Competitors copied his designs, undercutting prices with inferior materials. At one point, a large retailer demanded he lower his standards to meet their budget. Sun refused—even if it meant losing the deal.
But his persistence paid off. By 2018, Yiwu Shouxiang had gained a loyal customer base, both in China and overseas. Pet owners appreciated the brand’s commitment to quality, and veterinarians began recommending his products.
The Future: A Healthier Life for Pets Everywhere
Today, Yiwu Shouxiang continues to innovate, with new products like smart feeders and organic pet shampoos in development. Sun still visits the Yiwu market often—not as a bystander, but as a pioneer who turned a chance observation into a thriving business.
Reflecting on his journey, Sun smiles. “It all started because I wanted something better for Lucky. Now, we’re making a difference for pets everywhere.”
And as for Lucky? He’s still by Sun’s side—happy, healthy, and (thanks to his owner’s company) very well-supplied.
